Bernauer Straße
The street where the houses stood in the East and the pavement in the West. Today the Berlin Wall Memorial runs along it.
The houses on one side of Bernauer Straße belonged to East Berlin, while the pavement in front of their doors was already West Berlin.1 The border line ran directly in front of the façades, and once the barriers went up many residents fled: some slid down ropes from their windows, others jumped into the rescue nets of the West Berlin fire brigade. A few weeks after the Wall was built the houses were cleared, the remaining residents were forced to move elsewhere, and the doors and windows were bricked up.2
The records gathered here follow that sequence. The first weeks are window escapes: Ida Siekmann died after jumping from no. 48 on 22 August 1961, the Knittel family jumped one after another from no. 8 into the fire brigade's net, and two groups got out of no. 2 in one night. Two days after the border closed, the border policeman Conrad Schumann jumped the wire at the Ruppiner Straße corner. Then come the tunnels: Tunnel 29 in 1962, Tunnel 57 in 1964 and the unfinished Tunnel 71, dug up by border troops about ten metres short. Later records are mostly climbs at the finished strip, such as Dieter H.'s folding ladder at Brunnenstraße in 1986, and a lorry stopped after breaking through two gates at Ruppiner Straße in April 1989.
Today the Berlin Wall Memorial runs along 1.4 km of the former strip, with the last stretch of the border preserved in its full depth, the Documentation Centre with its tower, and the Chapel of Reconciliation on the site of the church that the GDR blew up in 1985.1 The tower cross of the old church is displayed at the chapel, the course of Tunnel 57 is traced on the memorial grounds, and between 2017 and 2019 the Berliner Unterwelten association built a visitor tunnel to the unfinished escape tunnel of 1971.3 More than 140 event markers along the site describe moments in its history.2
