NCO Egon Z. knocks down his squad leader and flees with two women
A border troops NCO knocked out his squad leader and escaped near Gartenstraße together with his sister and her friend.
On 16 February 1962 Egon Z., a non-commissioned officer (Unteroffizier) of the border troops, escaped to West Berlin near Gartenstraße.
To get away he knocked down the squad leader (Postenführer) he was on duty with.
He did not flee alone: his sister and a friend of hers crossed with him. The memorial marker does not record how the two women reached the border strip.
