The Mathern family leaves by the ground floor
Alarmed when the first front doors on Bernauer Straße were locked, the Mathern family fled from their ground-floor flat on 17 August 1961.
A few days after the border was closed, the authorities began locking the front doors of the houses on Bernauer Straße to stop further escapes.
Alarmed by this, the Mathern family fled from their ground-floor home at Bernauer Straße 11 on 17 August 1961.
The escape was photographed by Horst Siegmann; the photograph (Landesarchiv Berlin) is shown at the memorial.
