Privacy notice

This site sets no cookies, has no forms or user accounts, and shows no advertising. You can read every page without giving us any personal data. This notice explains the few ways in which data about your visit is still processed: by our host, by videos you choose to play, by cookie-free visit statistics and when you email us.

Who is responsible

The controller under Article 4(7) of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is Berlin Experiences DMC UG (haftungsbeschränkt), Gotlandstraße 10a, 10439 Berlin, Germany, represented by its managing director, Matthew Robinson. Email: info@berlinexperiences.com. Further details are in the imprint.

Hosting and server log files

The site is hosted by Hostinger. When you open a page, your browser sends the server technical information that it needs to deliver the page, and the server records it in log files: your IP address, the date and time, the page or file requested, the referring page, the amount of data sent, the status of the request, and your browser’s user-agent string. We use this information only to deliver the site, to keep it secure and stable, and to see in aggregate which pages are read and which search engines read them. We do not combine it with other data or use it to identify visitors. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Hostinger processes this data on our behalf; see Hostinger’s privacy policy. Log files are kept only as long as these purposes require.

Maps

The maps are drawn from OpenStreetMap data that this site hosts itself, together with the fonts and symbols they need, and the route of the Wall and the escape pins are served from this site too. Your browser therefore contacts no other server to show a map; the requests appear only in this site’s own server logs (see above).

Videos

Some articles show videos from YouTube. Nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press “Play video”; the video then plays from youtube-nocookie.com, and Google (Google Ireland Limited) receives your IP address and the details of your browser and can set cookies or similar identifiers on your device. The legal basis is your consent, given by pressing play (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR). See Google’s privacy policy. Other videos are links that open on the publisher’s own site.

Visit statistics

We count visits with Umami Cloud, which sets no cookies and does not track you across sites. When a page loads, a script from cloud.umami.is records which page was opened, the referring page and general details of your browser and device. Umami uses your IP address only briefly, to deliver the request and derive an approximate location, and does not store it in the statistics. We see only totals. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in knowing which pages are read (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). See Umami’s privacy policy.

Email

If you write to us, for example to report an error or suggest an escape, we use your email address and what you write only to answer you and to correct or add to the site, and we delete the correspondence when it is no longer needed for that. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering enquiries and keeping the site accurate (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Fonts, images, search and links

Fonts, photographs, maps and the search index are served from this site, not loaded from third parties, and search runs in your browser. Links to other websites (for example Chronik der Mauer, Wikimedia Commons or Berlin Experiences) send data to those sites only when you click them; their own privacy policies then apply.

Your rights

You have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, and to have it corrected, erased or restricted, to data portability, and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Articles 15 to 21 GDPR). You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future. Write to info@berlinexperiences.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority; the authority responsible for us is the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (datenschutz-berlin.de).

The people in these stories

The stories describe events between 1961 and 1989, drawn from published sources, which each page lists. People appear as they are named in those sources. If you or a relative appear on the site and want something checked or changed, please write to us.
