The betrayed second tunnel from Bernauer Straße 78
Tunnel 29's builders dug again from the same cellars; on breakthrough day Stasi officers lay in wait at Brunnenstraße 45. The diggers noticed in time, but 14 would-be escapees and three couriers were arrested.
In September 1962, 29 people escaped through "Tunnel 29", dug by West Berlin students from a factory ruin at Bernauer Straße 78 to Schönholzer Straße 7.
Shortly afterwards some of the tunnel builders began a second escape tunnel from the same cellar rooms. This one was betrayed.
On the day of the breakthrough in February 1963, officers of the Ministry for State Security were waiting in the cellar of Brunnenstraße 45. The tunnel diggers realised this in time, but 14 people who had hoped to escape and three couriers were arrested and sentenced.
