Gerhard D.'s family escapes through a bricked-up cellar window
A neighbour reported West Berlin police loading things into a car; East Berlin police found the family's walled-up cellar window broken open and the four of them gone.
On the evening of 29 September 1961 a resident of Bernauer Straße 30 reported that West Berlin police officers were loading items into a car in front of her house.
East Berlin police then discovered that the already bricked-up cellar window of the D. family had been broken open.
Gerhard D., his wife and their two daughters had escaped to the West through the cellar window.
