Eight years after digging had first started in this part of Bernauer Straße, a new tunnel project began in the cellar of Bernauer Straße 80 in West Berlin.
The Ministry for State Security received a tip-off and then used listening probes in the border strip to locate the tunnel.
In May 1970 the Stasi had the tunnel, by then 85 metres long, exposed by digging a trench across its path. It was never used for an escape.

A tunnel from the former freight yard towards the corner house at Eberswalder and Oderberger Straße had to be abandoned a few metres short in July 1963 after the plan was betrayed and two diggers were arrested in East Berlin.
