On 28 November 1988 a member of the GDR border troops fled to West Berlin with his weapon at the Ostpreußendamm in Steglitz, after removing the bolt from his patrol partner's submachine gun.
On Monday 28 November 1988 a member of the GDR border troops fled to West Berlin carrying his weapon. He crossed the Wall at the Ostpreußendamm, in the borough of Steglitz in the south of the city.
According to a report in the Berliner Morgenpost, which a Senate press spokesman confirmed, he had first taken the bolt out of his patrol partner's submachine gun, so that the other soldier's weapon no longer worked.
The escape went unnoticed, the Senate spokesman said.
