Ulrich H. goes into the bushes and does not come back
On the evening of 16 August 1961 Ulrich H., born 1942, a riot policeman on patrol between the Rudower Chaussee control point and the Kiesberg, said at about 8.30 p.m. that he was going into the bushes to relieve himself. He did not come back: he had deserted with his carbine, leaving his helmet and raincoat.
At 1.45 a.m. on 17 August 1961 the Treptow police reported the desertion of Unterwachtmeister Ulrich H., born in 1942, of 'Packzug 2, Abt. 8, Ber. Dresden'. On the previous evening he had been on patrol with another policeman between the Rudower Chaussee control point and the Kiesberg. At about 8.30 p.m. he said he was going into the bushes to relieve himself.
When the patrol was relieved he had not come back. A check showed that he had deserted, leaving his helmet and rubber coat behind but taking his service identity card, his carbine and ammunition. An investigation was opened.

Late on 19 August 1961 two riot policemen deserted from Onckenstraße in Treptow to West Berlin, leaving their carbines behind. Three days later they turned up at the Wiener Brücke in a Volkswagen and waved to a guard of their old unit.
