The Lloyd 600 with a secretary behind the back seat
An Egyptian geology student drove a small Lloyd back to West Berlin through Checkpoint Charlie; in a hiding place at the back was a secretary from the GDR Building Academy.
The Stasi had learned that two West Berlin escape-helper groups, named in the report as the Jensch-Schütz and Wagner groups, were about to use a Lloyd 600 and a Lloyd estate car to smuggle East Germans out.
At about 11.40 p.m. on 12 July 1964 a geology student at the Free University, a citizen of the United Arab Republic (Egypt), drove the Lloyd 600 into the Friedrichstraße/Zimmerstraße checkpoint on his way back to West Berlin. Controllers found a hiding place at the back of the car, and in it a secretary from the Deutsche Bauakademie who lived in Berlin-Karlshorst, born in 1939. Both were arrested.
The student said he knew nothing about anyone hidden in the car. He had only been asked by a man in West Berlin to drive it to East Berlin for repairs, where it was collected from the car park at Café Warschau by a stranger and brought back about an hour and a half later. The day before, two young West Germans had been arrested at the Heinrich-Heine-Straße crossing with the Lloyd estate, in which a stoker from Hohen Neuendorf born in 1904 was hidden; they too claimed to have been paid only to park the car in Brückenstraße and pick it up again.
