Telecom fitter runs through Checkpoint Charlie
A 21-year-old East Berlin telecommunications fitter, installing surveillance cameras at Checkpoint Charlie, used an unguarded moment to sprint through the control area to West Berlin.
In January 1986 a 21-year-old telecommunications fitter from East Berlin had been working for several days at the Friedrichstraße/Zimmerstraße road crossing, better known as Checkpoint Charlie. His job was to install observation cameras and room-security systems in the entry and exit areas of the checkpoint.
Such work was normally carried out under the eye of border guards. On 17 January 1986 the fitter found a moment when nobody was watching him and ran straight through the control area into West Berlin.
An investigation report of the GDR border troops later concluded that once the security post had realised what the man intended, there was no longer any chance of stopping him by tactical means, including the use of firearms.

Shortly after midnight a man used a two-metre ladder to climb the rear wall at Glienicke/Nordbahn, set off the signal fence, ran the last 17 metres and used the same ladder to get over the final wall — the guards never saw him.

An applicant for an exit visa who worked near the border prepared tools and a change of trousers, got over the inner wall, and was arrested climbing the signal fence.

Over the rear wall and across the Bösebrücke
A janitor and a construction helper climbed into the Bornholmer Straße checkpoint area with a ladder, got into the diplomats' lane and simply walked across the Bösebrücke — guards who saw them assumed they had been cleared.
