Early on 26 January 1989 a 23-year-old East German bricklayer scrambled over the Wall from Pankow into Wedding. Border guards saw him but did not open fire.
Early on Thursday 26 January 1989 a 23-year-old East German bricklayer scrambled over the Berlin Wall from Pankow, which the report calls an East Berlin suburb, and reached Wedding in West Berlin uninjured.
A West Berlin police spokesman said East German border guards had spotted him as he escaped, but did not open fire. His name was not released.
