Two men flee over the Wall into Lübars a day before their army call-up
On 4 May 1987 two East Germans aged 23 and 26, due to be inducted into the army the next day, climbed over the Wall into the rural Lübars area of West Berlin while shots were fired. Both arrived unhurt.
On Monday 4 May 1987 two East German men, aged 23 and 26, climbed over the Berlin Wall into the rural Lübars area of West Berlin.
According to West Berlin Senate spokesman Winfried Fest, they escaped one day before they were due to be inducted into the East German army. Shots were fired during the escape; officials could not say whether the guards had fired at the two men or only fired warning shots. Both reached the West unharmed.
Fest declined to release their names.
