# Berlin Wall Escapes > A sourced record of escapes and escape attempts across the Berlin Wall, 13 August 1961 – 9 November 1989: tunnels, window jumps, ziplines, vehicles, swimmers, boats, balloons, disguises and border guards who fled. Every story is written from published historical sources (chiefly the Chronik der Mauer and the Berlin Wall Foundation, plus Stasi records, US diplomatic telegrams and contemporary press), which are listed with each story. Where sources disagree, the story says so instead of choosing silently. A Berlin Experiences project (https://www.berlinexperiences.com). The collection is not a complete list: around 5,000 people are thought to have escaped into West Berlin while the Wall stood, most without leaving a record. It documents the events that are well sourced. When citing a story, please link to its page and name the original sources listed there.
